1. Stop your Vehicle

It may sound obvious, but it is the first thing you must do after a car accident is stop your vehicle and make sure everyone is okay. Once you have checked on the safety of each of your passengers, make sure the area around your vehicle is clear before you exit the vehicle and check on other people involved in the accident. Call for an ambulance, if anyone was injured in the car accident.

2. Call the Police

It is very important to call 911 following a car accident so the police will come to the accident scene, investigate the accident, and make an official Accident Report. You should inform the investigating officer of any injuries or pain you feel as a result of the collision. However, you should not express guilt or make any statements about your responsibility for the car accident. It is important to answer questions by police, but do not take responsibility for the accident.

3. Take Photos

It is easy to document a car accident with the advent of the smart phone. Simply pull out your camera and take pictures of the damage to all vehicles involved in the accident and the scene of the collision. If you and your passengers do not have a smart phone or camera in the car, take photographs of your car and the accident scene as soon as you can after the accident.

4. Gather Information

Make sure you get the names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers and insurance information for all parties involved in the accident. Additionally, write down the license plate number, make, model, and year for every vehicle in the crash.

5. Find Witnesses

Be sure to speak with any witness that stopped at the scene of the accident and write down their names, contact information, and a summary of what the remember or saw during your car accident.

6. Contact a Lawyer

After your accident, it is important to your future and compensation to contact a personal injury attorney to assist you in handling your car accident claim. An experienced Oklahoma personal injury attorney can guide you through the claims process and advise you on dealing with or speaking with the insurance company or claims adjuster. An Oklahoma personal injury attorney can help you communicate with the insurance company about how the accident occurred and in obtaining compensation for your pain and suffering, medical bills and property damage.
